WARM-UP FOR TAEKWONDO

Be Alert, Energized and Flexible

DVD Program

 OK, I admit it....

I have made a terrible mistake...

I broke one of the most important rules of business.  I am giving you WHAT YOU

NEED....not what you want.  What was I thinking???!!!

Let me tell you why I did it.  I have memories of starting every Taekwondo class

with Jumping Jacks, push-ups, situps, lunges, squats (and every-other

bodyweight calisthenic  you can think of) and then finishing up with some

ballistic leg swings and static stretching.  I was sore, tired and overstretched

before I even began forms and sparring.

THIS COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG!  You are only as strong as your

foundation.  The foundation for your Taekwondo class is your Warm-Up.

With something as important as the cornerstone of your Martial Art practice,

  it had better be right.

Since you asked for honest thoughts both positive or negative, I'll start with the
positive. After watching the DVD I realized two things, number one my own
warm-up routine and the one I do for my students is as you say "Old School",
we do similar mobility movements but in most cases they are either only left or
right or up or down the joints were never put through different degrees circular
motion at varying angles, you showed how to warm-up parts of the body that
we as martial artists use but took for granted, probably because we had no

idea on how to, such as the jaw, the chest, and the back, we spent more time

doing useless crap such as jumping jacks and static stretching, which by the

way I stopped doing after watching TTKDA VOL. I.

In the DVD you demonstrated how to get the best warm-up and mobility in each
body part that a Taekwondo player would use, you showed how to safely and
properly do them for maximum results in the least amount of time. The Active
Flexibility and Dynamic Flexibility movements were straight forward and

specific to the way we move and kick, front, side and back, the joints were put

through their full range of motion at varying degrees and intensities. I can't think

of any body part that we use in Taekwondo that you might have missed in the

  DVD.

At first I thought the DVD was too short at only 28 minutes, after watching it a
couple of times I realized that every part of the body was put through it's full

range of motion in a timely and functional fashion, thus quality preceded over

quantity. The second point that I realized is that I will never do an "Old School"

warm-up again, no more useless half way joint movements or exercises not

specific for Taekwondo. If the warm-up is inferior the player may not reach their

full potential in training, I for one plan to incorporate the movement preps from

the DVD to properly prepare my own students for a safe and productive training

session, giving them a different perspective and making the warm-up exciting

and challenging. My only negative thought is I wish I knew this stuff years ago.

Thanks for giving me the tools to help make myself and my students better
prepared, conditioned and helping our sport and art reach the next level,

   "keep em coming"!

   Yours in Taekwondo,

  Tim Bell
